Bargarh District a Birds Eye view
Bargarh is a magnificent district in the west end of Odisha. It is a renowned district famous for its ancient glory and pioneer in the field of art and culture.
Bargarh is one among the three expansion districts that came under District Primary Education Programme in the year 1997-98 under the 2nd phase states at National level & under the new expansion districts at States level having strategy its own objective s and priority areas to achieve the U.E.E.
The district is surrounded by Jharsugugda district to the north, Bargarh & Sonepur district to the north, Bolangir& Nuapada district to the south and the western border coincide with the border of Chhatisgarh state. The district lies between 20 degree 19’N and 21 degree 20’N latitude, 80 degree 40’E 83 degree 05’E longitude scattering over a total area of 5834 sq kms. The climate of the district is unique in nature. The temperature rises up to 48 degree Celsius during peak summer in May accompanied by intolerable heat wave and falls as low as 11degree Celsius during December with severe cold. The annual rain fall in the district is 151cms having 65 rainy days on an average and confined to the month of June to October every year the rainfall is highly uneven and irregular which cause drought years together in the non-irrigated belt of the district.
Geographical Area
The longest river Mahanadi, the Ganga of Odisha, enters into the state flowing from Chattisgarh in the western border of the district. The other rivers of the district are Jeera , Danta, Ong and Jhaun. The cultivable land in the districts is 1,78076 hectares while 33% of the total area spreading over 1920.95sq.kms covers with forest. The geographical shape of the district is uneven having a mixture blend of plains and hilly are demarcated by the “Gandhamardan” and the “Barapahad” mountains at the south west and western side of the district respectively. The district linked by N.H 6, major PWD roads but railway connection covers a little portion of the district.
The district Bargarh forms a part of Eastern plateau and hills as far as agro climatic zone is concerned. This is an area underlain by crystalline rocks. One being the open landscape covering Bargarh sub division and the other the forest area cover Padampur subdivision.
The district Bargarh came in to existence from the 1st April of 1993. This was carved out from the erstwhile-undivided Bargarh district and comprises of two subdivisions i.e Bargarh and Padampur 12 C.D Blocks and 8 Tahasils, 2 N.A.C and one Municipality.
This new district is located in north west part of orrisa bordering the State of Chattisgarh .The district is bounded by Jharsugugda district to the north, Bargarh & Sonepur district to the north, Bolangir & Nuapada district to the south. The district has 5834sq kms.
The district has an extreme type of climate with out hot and dry summer followed by extensive monsoon rain and severely chilly winter. The average annual rainfall in the undivided Bargarh District was 1527 mm, which is adequate for good Kharrif crop but the rainfall is not well distributed. The Padampur sub division does not does not get sufficient rain to support even one good Kharrif crop.
A large variety of economic minerals and Ores are in the district, which includes Bauxite, Limestone, Mica and Quartz Bauxite deposits have been traced in Gandhamardhan plateau and china clay at Katapali area. Extensive deposit of lime stone, suitable for lime burning used in the Iron and steel and other metallurgical industries and cement making occurs in the district.
Bargarh district has two different kinds of scenario in the field economic development. The area under the Hirakud Dam project has a fairly developed agricultural sector, which contributes to the development of the other sectors also. The rain fed area like Padampur subdivision and Bhatli and Ambabhona blocks are back ward with traditional agricultures and lack of development in the other sectors also Agriculture is the most important economic activity in the district. The handloom wavers are also found having good financial condition.
In order to give the real support to the Elementary Education this year one DIET has been set up in Bargarh hence the District will not further depend on the neighboring district for teachers training programs.
The District is famous for the wavers bringing glory for the district keeping it in View the Govt.of India has setup one IIHT (Indian Institute of Handloom Technology )in bargarh.
